Digital Kickstart… Media and communications training for sole traders and SME’s

Are you setting up a new business or social enterprise? Do you want to brush-up on your digital skills? Need some practical support in communication and branding? Then the Digital Kick Start workshops are for you.

These hands-on workshops are specifically designed to support you to use basic equipment, online platforms and savvy know-how to help you navigate your communications and branding like a pro. Each workshop focuses on a different communication and branding area and provide opportunity for you to make and create in the session using some of the easiest to access technology and tools out there. The workshops have limited availability (only 5 spaces per workshop!) to ensure you get the level of support and one-to-one assistance from our facilitators.


Workshop 1: Graphic Design (Monday 18th June, 10am – 4pm)

Great design needn’t cost the earth. Join us for this interactive workshop that will show you how to make the most of online tools such as Canva and royalty free image databases to creating stunning designs. As part of the workshop you will:

  • Explore good design practices
  • Identify the key design components of your brand identify
  • Learn the technical skills to pull together logos, business cards, flyers and other promo with ease

By the end of the workshop you would have created your first piece of graphic design and be able to show it to the world!

Workshop 2: Social Media  (Monday 25th June, 10am – 4pm)

Trying to figure out your Insta from your Snapchat? With all the social media platforms out there, sometimes it is hard to know where to start and how to get the most out of them for your business. This workshop will help you to navigate the terrain and be a social media whizz. As part of the workshop you will:

  • Explore different social media platforms
  • Identify which social media platforms are right for you audience(s) and purpose
  • Develop the technical and creative skills to use specific social media platforms

By the end of the workshop, you would have created a social media strategy that’s bespoke to your needs and be all set to take online world by storm!

Workshop 3: Blogging  (Monday 2nd July, 10am – 4pm)

Blogging is a great way to tell the world more about yourself and your business, as well as helping potential customers find you in search engines. If you want to start blogging but don’t know where to begin, or if you have an existing blog but want to learn how to use it more effectively, then this is a great place to start. As part of the workshop you will:

  • Explore different types of blogs and how voice is constructed in them
  • Create a voice stylesheet for your blog that’s perfect for your audience and purpose
  • Get to grips with key writing techniques from structuring blog posts to basic SEO
  • Learn the basic functions of WordPress and how to use it to set-up a blog

By the end of the workshop you will have created a blog post and be ready to share it with the blogosphere!

Workshop 4: Smartphone Photography  (Monday 9th July, 10am – 4pm)

They say an image can speak a thousand words and in this ever-increasing media age, visuals are key to any communications and branding strategy. This workshop will take you through the process of creating engaging images with your smartphone or tablet. As part of the workshop you will:

  • Identify where, why and how you can use images as part of your communications strategy and to support your brand
  • Explore key photography techniques and how to use them to get the perfect picture
  • Edit photographs using free apps and web tools to enhance them and give them an individual style

By the end of the workshop you would have created a series of images ready for your social platforms, website, blog or promotional literature. Get snapping!

Workshop 5: Smartphone Video Production  (Monday 16th July, 10am – 4pm)

So, you need a snazzy video making for your website and social media platform but haven’t got the cash to afford calling in a video production company? Don’t worry, this workshop will take you through all you need to know about using your smartphone or tablet to create videos specifically designed for the web. As part of the workshop you will:

  • Identify the key components of videos online and what makes then great
  • Explore pre-production techniques aimed to help you plan awesome videos
  • Get to grips with the basic technical skills needed to record fab videos
  • Create a basic edit of your video using free apps

By the end of the workshop, you’ll have your first super short video ready to go!

Workshop 6: Web Design  (Monday 23rd July, 10am – 4pm)

The thought of building a website from scratch may seem like a daunting task but fear not, there are tools out there that mean that you don’t have to be an expert coder to give it go. Using WordPress as its basis, this workshop will guide you through the thinking process behind creating a website and delve into the basic technical skills that you’ll need to get started. As part of the workshop you will:

  • Explore web design and existing sites so that you can be bang on trend with your website
  • Identify and begin to create the content and copy you will need on your website
  • Get to grips with the key features of WordPress and how to use them to build your own bespoke website

By the end of the workshop you will have a full plan for your website and have the technical skills to start to build it!

All workshops are full days and will take place inside wehearttech C.I.C.’s office at Make. Liverpool North Docks, Unit 1, 34 Regent St, Liverpool, L3 7BN. After each workshop our facilitators will be available for short one-to-one discussions and advice. Workshops are £90.00 (non-refundable) and include a light lunch, refreshments and resources.
