As part of the roll out of Tea and Tech across the Wigan Borough, we’ve developed a fabulous partnership with Belong Villages through which we have created a new strand of #teaandtech parties… Techniscence sessions. These sessions use technology to support and enhance reminiscence practices & activities for people living with dementia.
As part of Dementia Awareness week 2015, we dropped by Belong Wigan to deliver a Techniscence Tea Party on the theme of ‘seaside holidays’. During the party, our attendees were treated to tastes (fish and chip flavoured crisps, candy floss… the whole lot) and sounds (seagulls and waves!) of the seaside and shared with us their memories of holidays on Britain’s golden sands (we’re not being ironic here!). Using Google images and some Pinterest love, we created a lovely board of the participants’ recollections and images from the past! You can see what was created here!
The following week we dropped by again to explore memories of the dance halls, creating another Pinterest board and a YouTube playlist of some musical blasts from the past! Sylvia, a Belong Resident said, “I enjoyed it very much. It brought back memories of family holidays.” and Josie, also a resident at Belong, Wigan said, “I have really enjoyed myself today. It has brought back memories and it was good to remember them. I would come again.”
We’ve also been working with Belong to train primary school children to be Dementia Friends and support them to explore how they can use technology to find out more about the older people in their lives through chatting about music memories and other fun things! These workshops have been amazingly well received *blows own trumpet* and we are hoping to extend this strand of our work in the future… so watch this space!
And as for #teaandtech, we’ve got some more cakey and techie loveliness planned for later in the year as part of Get Online week… check back later in the year for more of the roll-out!
